April 21 - On this day in 1986 - Geraldo, Al Capone and a Splitting Headache!

On this day in 1986 - Geraldo Rivera opened a vault that belonged to Al Capone at the Lexington Hotel in Chicago. Nothing of interest was found inside. 

I was so excited all day... That night, live on TV - Geraldo was going to open Al Capone's vault!  I hadn't been entirely up to speed on who Al Capone was, but had become extremely excited after learning that this vault might be blown open to find old gangster bones and no telling what else... 

After school that day I went home with Georgie... My Mom later came to pick me up as Georgie was being called in for dinner... Her Mom Jeanie asked if I wanted to "take a plate" home with me and I said, "No Thank you.." and then she said, "Are you sure? It's fried fish..." and then I said, "Okay" and happily took my fish home with Mom reminding me nearly all the way to the bottom of the bluff "not to impose".  That was big at our house when we were little... "Don't impose"...

Back at Comer Canyon, as we finished dinner and got ready to settle in front of the TV to wait for the gangster bones, I got

the most terrible headache.  It was the most terrible headache I'd ever had and still ranks one of my top terrible headaches of all time... I laid on the couch and nibbled on the crushed ice that Mom had brought me in that little glass mug with a grape pattern on it and waited patiently for this major historical event to unfold ... Geraldo opened the vault to find nothing... and my headache went on for sometime.. off and on for I don't even know how long.  Sometime later we were told they were tension headaches because I was so high strung.  I'm still high strung with not nearly as many headaches as I used to have, but I manage to manage the ones I do have.  The read doozies require Vics Vap o' Rub on the face and Icy Hot on the scalp - then your noggin is in such a tingly tizzy you can't even feel it hurting :)



As for Geraldo, some took that opportunity to poke fun at him for his open "mindedness" - he has said that if nothing was in the vault he would sing... and he kept his word and did just that.  I wish when he shrugged his head down that night and walked off camera as all of those "working Joes" stood there snickering, that he would have realized that he was Geraldo effing Rivera and could go after a new story the next day while those boobs would be stuck there doing their daily job!
