8/24 - On this Day in 1932 – Amelia Earhart

I've thrown together a little hodge-podge of Amelia Earhart quotes, videos and links in honor of the anniversary of her first US non-stop flight.  Amelia Earhart was an incredibly courageous and fascinating woman!  Maybe we should focus on educating our daughters on more women like Amelia Earhart?

I do what I can ... but I just have a few aquariums full of guppies. =)    I give you this info and beg of you to share it ... especially with your young dahlings.

(Please and Thanks!)

1932 –
Amelia Earhart is the first woman to fly across the United States non-stop
(from Los Angeles to Newark, New Jersey).

“The most difficult thing is the decision to act, the rest is merely tenacity. The fears are paper tigers. You can do anything you decide to do. You can act to change and control your life; and the procedure , the process is its own reward.”

“Courage is the price that life exacts for granting peace.”

“Please know that I am aware of the hazards.
I want to do it because I want to do it."

“Obviously I faced the possibility of not returning when first I considered going. Once faced and settled there really wasn't any good reason to refer to it.”

There's an Amelia Earhart Festival!! -
It's in Atchison, KS ... I'm not quite sure how far away that is, but I plan to get on "googling" it right away!!

The most official news and updates can be found at AmeliaEarhart.com,

It's now believed that Amelia Earhart may have found herself attempting survival for a few days on an island, rather than crashing into the ocean as previously believed -

Dear Bill St. James ... and "Flashback"

Dear .. dear Bill St. James,

You and I have now shared more Sunday mornings than I did with my former hubby.

This morning I woke and came to my sun-filled kitchen, flipped the button on the java pot and went to turn my radio on.  My Sunday morning routine, Flashback, a pot of java and creative thinking time.  I thoroughly enjoy it!!

This morning however, I was perplexed because my favorite radio station in the world was playing static.

You would have to know the whole story behind that, Bill St. James ... I'll tell it in full another day, but in short ... that radio group is the place I really began learning about marketing and advertising in 2001, but sometimes I feel like they couldn't market their way out of a paper sack for themselves.

One of the fruits of this little problem (that I don't think they know they have) is that I can only occasionally pick up my favorite radio station in the world in my apartment.  I can't pick it up at ALL in my office, but I can pick it up perfectly in my car.  I've tried to arrange my media area in my kitchen to allow for the best reception of the station, but this morning ... there's NOTHING!

Anywho, Bill St. James ... I told you all of that, to tell you this ... your marketing REALLY could use some work.  I've only begun to investigate your situation ... but I can tell you with absolute certainty that I searched (off and on) for two hours to find a place to listen to your radio program online.  That's not groovy .... not groovy at all.

With all due respect .... let me give you a quick run down of what I would do if I were you, Bill St. James::
  1. I would set up a FB page.  I found a Facebook Group that I think is associated with you... and I joined it, but it only has 7 members.  Well, 8 members now, ;^)  You're welcome!!
  2. NEXT: I wouldn't just leave that FB page sitting there rotting in cyber-eternity ... I'd POST some things to it.  Now, I know that's a really outlandish and out of the box idea, Bill St. James ... but stick with me :)  I would have someone posting some of the songs and clips that you're playing ON Facebook, with the link to the "Listen Live" site.

I would post every day through the week ... do you realize that many of those in your demographic are sitting at their desk all week sharing links on Facebook?  They could be sharing YOUR links.
  3. THEN: I'd tie all of your sites in with "Google" so that it's easy for people to share and sign up. (i.e., they can sign up through their google account, they don't have to set up a NEW user name and password)
  4. Call me crazy, Bill St. James ... you wouldn't be the first ... but I'd even attach a WIDGET that had the capability to ADD Flashback with Bill St. James to one's Google or Outlook calendar, thus popping up a reminder on their computer or phone when the show is airing.

As you may well know, people have Internet on their phones now (in great numbers!!), therefore it wouldn't matter if they were "near a radio", they could just click the button and play your radio show right there on their phone.

These are just a few ideas for you.  I thoroughly enjoy your radio show ... it's absolute GOLD for anyone who's a fan of music and nostalgia!!  Keep up the groovy work!!

Yours Truly,
Kim Comer Jackson

The Ocho-riffic Song o' the Day - 8/17/2010 - A La Tears for Fears

((Well it doesn't feel very Ocho-riffic to me now because it's four days late.  I intended for this to be the Ocho-riffic song of the day on Friday the 13th.  Needless to say, the morning got away from me and by the end of the night, the LAST thing on earth I felt was Ocho-riffic.  And so, I'll take another run at making this a daily feature ... to challenge myself, if nothing else ...))

Everybody Wants to Rule the World
Tears for Fears -

It was the first Billboard Hot 100 number-one hit for Tears for Fears on June 8, 1985.

Welcome to your life

There's no turning back

Even while sleep

We will find you

Acting on your best behavior

Turn your back on mother nature

Everybody wants to rule the world

It's my own design

It's my own remorse

Help me to decide

Help make the most
Of freedom and of pleasure
Nothing ever lasts forever

Everybody wants to rule the world

There's a room where the light won't find you

Holding hands while the walls come tumbling down

When they do I'll be right behind you

So glad we've almost made it
So sad they had fade it
Everybody wants to rule the world

I can't stand this indecision

Married with a lack of vision

Everybody wants to rule the world

Say that you'll never never never need it

One headline why believe it ?

Everybody wants to rule the world

All for freedom and for pleasure

Nothing ever lasts forever

Everybody wants to rule the world

When asked how he feels about singing "Rule the World" after all these years; Curt Smith said, "I don't have a problem with that song. It was the perfect recording of that song. So it's actually kind of gratifying. I have no issues with it. Once you hit the beginning bars and that little guitar break, it's quite joyous. I still get a buzz from it. There are issues I have with other songs like Shout, because I'm not an angry 22-year-old anymore. So that, we've changed the arrangement. Basically, if you have an issue with something, you just try and change it and update so that emotionally it works for you now. But Rule the World doesn't need changing." August 16th, 1977 - A memory from the nucleus of my noggin...

As I read my mom's blog this morning, she recalled her memories of this day in 1977.  As I read her words, they tickled something in the back of my brain and I realized that I too had a memory of this day in 1977; though I was only three.

Picture it ... Massac County ... 1977 ... Fidget Comer was grilling on the patio, no doubt in her apron and I was close at hand; as I usually was ... assisting :)   Just inside the screen door, the phone jingled.  ((By the way, do y'all remember what a jingling phone sounds like?  Such a pleasant sound in comparison to the beepers, buzzers and songs that we have on our phones now...anywho, I digress...)) Mom sent me in to answer the phone and on the other end was my aunt insisting that I get Mom immediately and tell her Elvis was dead.  I started for the screen door as Mom finished flipping whatever was on the grill and came inside. I handed her the phone and told her Elvis had died.

The only thing I remember after that is the ensuing confusion when my Auntie directed Mom to find the station currently playing Mr. Bojangles, as that's the one she'd heard the shocking news on.  Mom's never been up to speed on current music ... and I guess this must have also been true in 1977.  ((Bob Dylan, my apologies....:) ))

As a kid... I was a pretty huge Elvis fan for a phase. I was from the "camp" ((...although I never went to camp :) )) in the late 80's who believed Elvis faked his death in 1977 and was still alive.  I never really bought into Kalamazoo, but I felt then and still do that enough intriguing points have been raised over the years to suggest that it was a very strong possibility.

As a side note, it was on this date in 1962 that Ringo Starr took over for Pete Best as drummer of the Beatles ... which brings me to this; it must be quite a statement of this "neck of the woods" that I can remember the death of Elvis Presley in 1977; but can't remember the death of John Lennon in 1980.

Ahhh .... Life in the Heartland ....

The Ocho-riffic Song o' the Day - 8/12/2010 -"...Just take your best shot and don't blow it..."

Fooling Yourself (The Angry Young Man)
The Grand Illusion-1978
Styx

Quite possibly my favorite Styx song EVAH! It's also quite possible that I'll say that approximately fifteen more times throughout the course of this blog.

Styx is, I believe .. beyond a shadow of a doubt my favorite band of all time.

From the WIKI regarding the origin of the lyrics::
"The song was written by guitarist, Tommy Shaw. Shaw has said many times in interviews that "Fooling Yourself" was originally based on Shaw's initial perception of Styx keyboardist Dennis DeYoung — an "angry young man" who viewed the group's successes with a wary eye and grew angry or depressed with every setback. It was only in later years, Shaw noted, that he began to see himself in the lyrics, and the song took on a more personal meaning to him." [citation needed]

_______________________________________________________________
You see the world through your cynical eyes
You're a troubled young man I can tell
You've got it all in the palm of your hand
But your hand's wet with sweat and your head needs a rest

And you're fooling yourself if you don't believe it
You're kidding yourself if you don't believe it
Why must you be such an angry young man
When your future looks quite bright to me
How can there be such a sinister plan
That could hide such a lamb, such a caring young man

You're fooling yourself if you don't believe it
You're kidding yourself if you don't believe it
Get up, get back on your feet
You're the one they can't beat and you know it
Come on, let's see what you've got
Just take your best shot and don't blow it

You're fooling yourself if you don't believe it
You're killing yourself if you don't believe it
Get up, get back on your feet
You're the one they can't beat and you know it
Come on, let's see what you've got
Just take your best shot and don't blow it
______________________________________________

Weeeeell, if Tommy Shaw can admit it ... so can I.
At one time, this song made me think of my ex-hub...
and now it reaches me on a more personal level;
hence the enlargement of the lyrics "don't blow it".

The Ocho-riffic Song o' the Day, Here Comes the Sun - 8/11/2010

Here Comes the Sun appeared on the 1969 Beatles album Abby Road.

I can't imagine a person whose soul does not frolic upon hearing this song.

George Harrison wrote this while wandering through Eric Clapton's garden after blowing off a meeting with Apple records in 1969.  At the time he was trying to find his upswing from a particularly craptacular year ... an arrest for possession of cannabis, the removal of his tonsils and a temporary leave from the band.

Harrison sang lead vocals, played acoustic guitar and used his newly acquired Moog synthesizer on this.
It was one of the first Pop songs to feature a Moog synthesizer.

As I poked around online in search of interesting tidbits about this song ....
I DID happen to run across a cover of it that I'd never heard before, done by Bon Jovi!!

..... So today, you get two songs for the price of one!!
((Which as you know, is free!!))
Enjoy!!
