It's "shotgun" weekend here. To those who live in the "hunting regions" those are familiar words. For those who live in cities and more sophisticated locations though … those have got to be the strangest words to hear. “Shotgun Season”
This takes place during deer season. It’s alternate way of hunting is “Bow Hunting”
I fell far from the apple tree on hunting. I was exposed to it heavily as a child. There are pictures of me smiling as I sat beside a dead deer with my brother and my dad … and to be perfectly honest that freaks me out now. I mean .. what would you do if your child went outdoors for an excursion later today and returned with a ‘cloud’ (or what the hell ever) full of he or she smiling beside dead animals?
I see these pictures come through sometimes now on social media … I can nearly smell the pictures when I see them. If you’ve never been around after a hunt you can’t really understand but it’s the smell of blood and gore.
Having been raised in a “hunting household” if you will - I’m aware that “shotgun season” is considered by many hunters to be “amateur weekend”. I get tickled because some are so pious and self-righteous regarding their killing of animals.
We’re all products of our environment. The environment will always shape who you are.
It has given me the point of view in life that “I don’t kill anything that’s not trying to kill me”.
